Chapter Nineteen

Rathian strolled out of the Manor, grinning up at his brother. Travi sat on his horse waiting for him.

"Everything work out all right last night?" Travi asked as Rathian swung up into the saddle.

"It was pretty much over by the time I arrived." He gestured to his decem to follow them. His bodyguards would arrange themselves around the prince's, but wouldn't listen or interfere in their conversation.

Stakel stepped out on the front steps and leaned against one of the pillars. Rathian felt his cheeks flush as his lover winked at him. He waved and Stakel nodded back. Antioc moved up beside Stakel, letting Rathian know the sub-commander would keep a casual eye on the man. Not that Stakel needed any protection. Last night had proven the ex-Consort could take care of himself.

"Let's go."

Travi led the way out of the court yard onto the forest trail.

They rode quietly for a few miles and then Travi dropped back to ride beside him. Rathian never realized how much he missed spending time with his older brother. Even when they weren't talking, it eased him. He didn't have to be the Imperator or the Prince. He could simply be himself.

"That man who watched us leave? Is he someone special?"

Travi's questions were neutral.

Smiling, he nodded. If it had been anyone else, he wouldn't have said anything. "Stakel is a Villious. Used to be a 152

Queen's Consort. He was left behind by his comrades and taken prisoner by our army."

"Why is he so important to you?" Travi frowned. "He's the enemy, isn't he?"

He shook his head. "No. This is between you and me. I don't want my men to hear it because they shouldn't doubt my authority. The first couple of days Stakel was here, I couldn't sleep. My mind was all over the place, wondering about him and worrying about what to do with him."

"Understandable. We don't know much about the Queen's Consorts, so he was a mystery." Travi slowed his horse to a walk. "Did something happen to change your mind?"

"I never really considered him a threat. There was something about him and my reaction to him that told me he wasn't there to harm me. Then one night, I had a vision or a dream." He shrugged. "I'm not sure what to call it. The High God spoke to me."

"The High God? You mean Xasel?" A puzzled expression crossed his brother's face. "I didn't think anyone worshipped him anymore."

"The ducenti have always worshipped Xasel and always will. We owe our existence to the god."

"Xasel visits you and tells you what? That Stakel means no harm and you can trust the man? And then you take him to your bed."

They drew their horses to a stop and Rathian turned to look at his brother.

"It wasn't that easy. I did think about the consequences, but there is something connecting us, Travi. I've never felt this way." He grimaced. "Bah, now I sound like a woman."

Travi laughed. "Stakel is an attractive man.
